LA-born Essex-Jamaican Singer Channels Aretha Franklin For The Modern Age!
The music industry is a strange beast. Many talented people pursue their careers from an extraordinarily early age and when they’re, “discovered” they blow up. Others might not even entertain the thought of making music until their mid-life crises. Celeste’s story is closer to the former than the latter but it wasn’t an easy or immediate rise for her.
Celeste Epiphany Walte, Celeste for short, was born in California. Her mom was an Essex girl and her dad was Jamaican American. Sadly they split up when Celeste was just 3 years old and that’s when she made the move back to England. Her musical exposure was down to a mixture of what her family listened to (Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, etc.) and eventually what she found herself on Youtube and iTunes.
Celeste remembers singing hymns in church at Brighton as a child. Later she joined musical forces with other teenagers at her school, even though she was painfully shy at the time. Celeste released her first song in response to her dad’s death when she was 16 and that got her a manager.
From there Celeste was signed to Lily Allen’s record label, Bank Holiday Records in 2016 who put out her debut EP, “The Milk & The Honey.” In 2018 Celeste signed with Polydor Records who released her second EP, “Lately” in March 2019. That same year, Celeste won a long list of awards, not least of which was the Rising Star Award at the Brit Awards in December! Now, in 2020, Celeste is a name on every music journalist’s lips as she gears up for recording a full album.
So, at age 26, Celeste has put in the work, she’s paid her dues, and she is finally poised to take the music world by storm this year. But, with all concerts cancelled, it’s a tough time to be a musician, especially one that’s meant to be riding a fresh wave of hype to get to the next level. All we can do is hope that Celeste will get creative and find a way to make sure COVID-19 doesn’t slow down her career too much!
