Shingai, former Noisettes star, shines bright on the cusp of her solo debut launch
Shingai Shoniwa is a name that might not strike you as familiar but, odds are, you’d immediately recognise her voice. For nearly a decade she was the lead singer and bassist of the Noisettes; a sort of indie-rock punk-pop band. One with a penchant for galloping through genres with little care for anything other than achieving maximum entertainment. It worked, brilliantly. This was due in no small part to Shingai’s unbelievable vocals, raw energy, and fearless fashion sense.
After a wildly successful global music career…she decided she was going to start over.
But, sometime around 2013, the Noisettes split up. After a wildly successful global music career, putting on live shows that are still the stuff of legend, she decided she was going to start over. And now, in 2019, she’s finally ready to release her solo debut EP, Ancient Futures.
Shingai kicked things off with the single, Coming Home. She chose to film the video for, Coming Home on location in Zimbabwe; even going so far as to use a local production company. It’s as if Shingai wanted to leave no room for misinterpretation. To make sure everyone knew this EP was an enduring declaration of her proud African heritage. Reminding us all that sometimes to move forward we’ve got to look to our past. And I, for one, can’t wait to see what new stories she chooses to tell on this EP that’s been so long in the making.
