Grime emcee says he’s repping JC?
London based grime artist, Still Shadey is one of the latest in a long line of emcees packing their bars with spirituality. From Stormzy, to Novelist, to Lady Leshurr this is nothing new for grime. But does Still Shadey’s zeal for God come at the expense of the quality of his music?
Honestly, it’s hard to say one way or the other. If anything it seems like his faith is sometimes the thing that takes his work to new heights and other times I wonder if it isn’t the thing that trips him up right off the blocks. One of the issues could be Shadey’s versatility.
The man does not like to be predictable and draws from a wide gamut of influences. His backlog of diverse singles speaks to this. But there are some genres of music where such direct spirituality feels foreign and some of his singles seem to suffer for it. Though, with enough repeat listens, those songs might shed their alien skin.
Regardless of those few sour grapes it’s clear that when Shadey’s on point he comes correct. And even though his approach might feel a bit more direct than other emcees, he’s unapologetically true to himself and he’s undeniably grime to his core.
