Better together! Poet julianknxx and fashion brand LABRUM partner to spread untold stories
I might be the only one, but I never expected to find a poet working at a fashion company. But, then again, I’ve never run into a company quite like LABRUM before!
Founded by Foday Dumbuya in 2015, LABRUM is a London based fashion brand. LABRUM seeks to draw consumers in with idiosyncratic design. Their mix of African aesthetics with British sensibilities comes together to serve a larger purpose; spreading untold stories.
Every fashion line they release begins with a story. It has to capture the team’s imagination first. Then the team works to sketch and sew things together. Meanwhile, julianknxx, resident poet and Creative Director, continues to flesh things out to create an immersive experience that sticks with customers. This approach is the opposite of fast fashion and there’s something beautiful and counter-intuitive about it.
From speaking to Julian and Fouad, it definitely seems to be working for them! Their team continues to produce compelling work together every season for over a year now and their release shows are the stuff of legend. You’ve got poets coming along and catching a newfound love and understanding of fashion. And stylists are enjoying the drama and pageantry that poetry brings to the table.
In short, I would never have imagined poetry and fashion working so well together. But I don’t think it’s because this is such an odd pairing; in fact now that I’ve seen it together it makes perfect sense. But, before LABRUM, I just never knew that fashion could be used to tell such meaningful stories.
