Black people have always used music to fight oppression. There’s a long, proud tradition of songs of protest and songs of hope attached to the Black civil rights movement. We want to highlight many of those for you.
But first, we want to point you to the current generation. Many of these artists wrote, recorded, and released these new songs of protest in a matter of days, in response to George Floyd and the protests. But the only reason they could be released so quickly is because this is a pain that runs so deep it’s difficult to imagine what blackness looks like divorced from it.
Some of the lyrics may shock you, may offend you, may make you weep. I encourage you to listen on anyway. Because this is the voice of a generation crying out in pain, begging for mercy, but making it clear their anger will not be ignored
